The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are a group of autonomous government public medical colleges of higher education. These institutes have been declared by an Act of Parliament as Institutes of National Importance. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956. Since then, 22 more institutes were announced. As of January 2020, fifteen institutes are operating and eight more are expected to become operational until 2025. Proposals were made for six more AIIMS.
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research(PGIMER) was established in the year 1962. The institution is one of the top institutes of medical education in India. Currently, the institution functions under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Indian Nursing Council, and the Government of India.
The institution was started with an aim to provide students with quality education and facilities to become highly qualified medical teachers and doctors.Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research(PGIMER) offers more than 50 medical courses such as Medical Courses, Para-Medical Courses, Nursing Courses, Residency Programs, Short-term Training, Elective Training, and MHA, MPH, PGDPHM and Fellowship Courses.
Facilities such as Hostels, Water Sports, Library, Playground, Laboratories, etc, are offered to the students. Admission is offered on the basis of an entrance examination known as INI CET(Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test).

christian Medical College, Vellore was established in the year 1918 and was founded by Dr Ida Sophia Scudder, the daughter of a medical missionary. The medical institute is also known as CMC Vellore. The institute is an unaided, non-capitation, Christian minority, educational institution. Earlier the college was affiliated to the University of Madras, later on, it got affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University. CMC Vellore courses include BSc Nursing, AHS Degree, Diploma Nursing, AHS Diploma/PG Diploma/Fellowship, DM/M.Ch, Post Doctoral Fellowships, MPH & MSc Epidemiology, M.Sc Biostatistics, Medical Physics, MS Bioengineering, Medical Post Graduate Courses, Medical Post Graduate Fellowship Courses and MSc Nursing, Post Basic BSc Degree, Nursing Fellowship, Nursing Post and Diploma.
4. National Institute of Mental Health & Neuro Sciences
The National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) is a multidisciplinary institute for patient care and academic pursuit in the field of mental health and neurosciences.
NIMHANS is synonymous with providing high standards of clinical care, quality training and cutting-edge research in the frontier areas. Combined priorities for comprehensive patient care, manpower development and research, stem from the commitment to an integrated and multidisciplinary approach which addresses societal needs. The advances in genomics, computational neuroscience, mathematical modelling, neuroimaging, molecular biology and a host of new disciplines including public health, are being translated to help humanity in need and promote the growth of knowledge.
A special feature of this Institute since its inception is the combination of research and training with promotive, preventive and curative aspects of clinical services in Mental Health and Neurosciences.
The manpower development programmes at NIMHANS reflect the strides in fusing together and nurturing behavioural sciences, neurosciences, basic biological sciences and ancient health systems.
5. sanjay gandhi postgraduate institute of medical sciences
the institute offers DM/MCh/PDF/PDCC/and senior residency (hospital services) training programs in various specialties. The institute runs doctorate of medicine), M.Ch. (Magister Chirurgi), and MD (Doctor of Medicine) programs, training residents in surgical and medical super specialty and specialty fields. It also runs Ph.D. programs for basic science research and Bsc Nursing 4 years course.
It pioneered the 3 year DM/MCh program at a time when the typical course was two years before MCI mandated that all such training programs should be three years duration. It was the first Indian institution to start DM courses in clinical immunology, medical Genetics and MCh in endocrine surgery.
The institute has a library with more than 21,000 books and subscriptions to nearly 450 scientific journals, a computer network with more than 230 computers, Internet connections, and e-mail facilities. Patient care activities are computerized.
There is a main auditorium, a smaller auditorium, and seminar rooms.
Teaching covers basic, medical, and surgical specialties, with compulsory and optional courses covering areas relevant to all aspects of medicine. There is a strong emphasis on research and training in research methodology in postgraduate courses.
All students have to complete two compulsory courses (Basic Course and Course on Biostatistics), and two optional courses from among those offered, including Scientific Communication, Clinical Decision Analysis, Research Methodology, Laboratory Instrumentation, Computer Applications, Biomedical Literature Search, Bioinformatics, Basic Immunology, Medical Physics, and Molecular Biology, etc., to be eligible for the final examination.
